When I was a kid, I used to dream that I accidentally showed up to school in my pajama bottoms. (Oh, wait, did I actually do that once?) How mortifying!

If you’ve just landed a new job, the last thing you want to do is to create a negative first-day-on-the-job impression with your colleagues and boss. So give yourself a heads up with these 12 tips to smooth your transition. Here’s one tip to get you started:

Test run. There’s nothing more embarrassing than showing up late on your first day. Find the best, most efficient route to get to the new office. Whether you will use public transportation, walk or drive, time how long it takes you to get there. Always be sure to allot extra time for traffic and rush hour congestion.
